Jute vs cotton vs canvas tote bags: how to choose for a bulk order

If you are ordering tote bags in volume, the fabric decides almost everything that follows: how the print looks, how long the bag lasts, how it ships, and whether customers keep using it. Most buyers pick on looks and find out about the other things after the first shipment. This guide goes through the three fabrics we make most, and what to ask before you commit.
The short version
- Cotton is soft, light and prints cleanly. It is the default for giveaways, bookshops, grocery and anything that gets washed.
- Canvas is heavier cotton, woven tighter and thicker. It holds its shape, carries weight and suits retail bags people keep for years.
- Jute is a stiff natural fibre with a visible weave. It looks rustic, takes bold one or two colour prints, and suits produce, gifts and eco-led brands. It is not for fine detail or machine washing.
Cotton: soft, light, easy to print
Plain cotton totes are usually woven in the 100 to 220 GSM range (GSM is grams per square metre, a measure of how heavy the fabric is). At the light end the bag is thin and drapes easily. It is cheap to make, folds small and ships flat. The smooth surface takes fine detail well, so photographic or multi-colour artwork looks sharp.
The trade-off is strength. A thin cotton tote handles a few books or a light grocery run. If the handles are stitched as a single line, they will be the first thing to fail under load. For anything heavy, ask for reinforced handles (a box-stitch or cross-stitch at the join) or step up in fabric weight.
Order cotton when: the bag is a giveaway or event bag, the artwork is detailed, customers will wash it, or shipping volume matters.
Canvas: heavier cotton for bags that last
Canvas is also cotton, but woven denser and sold by weight in ounces per square yard or GSM. As a rough guide, 8 oz is about 270 GSM, 12 oz is about 400 GSM and 16 oz is about 540 GSM. The difference you feel is stiffness. A 12 oz canvas tote stands up by itself and holds a full load; an 8 oz canvas is softer and folds more easily.
Canvas prints very well, though the slightly textured surface softens the finest detail compared with a flat cotton. It is the usual choice for retail totes, branded merchandise people actually keep, and bags that will carry books, bottles or shopping regularly.
The cost is bulk: canvas bags are heavier and take more carton space, which matters for shipping volume.
Order canvas when: the bag is sold or given as something to keep, the load is heavy, or you want a firm, structured shape.
Jute: natural, stiff, bold
Jute is a plant fibre woven into a coarse, golden-brown cloth. Bag weights typically sit around 250 to 450 GSM. It is strong for its weight and stands upright, with a texture no cotton can imitate. That look is the reason buyers choose it: farmers' markets, coffee roasters, garden brands, wedding favours and any brand where "natural" is part of the message.
Be realistic about printing. Jute has an uneven weave, so fine lines and small text break up. Bold logos in one or two colours work well. Photographs do not. Jute also should not go through a washing machine; it is spot-cleaned. Many jute bags are made with a cotton lining, or laminated inside, which smooths the interior and makes the bag wipe-clean.
A blend called juco (jute and cotton) keeps most of the jute look but is softer and prints a little better. It is a good middle option if you like the look but your artwork has finer detail.
Order jute when: the look is the point, the logo is bold and simple, and the bag will not be washed.

Five questions to answer before you request a quote
- What will it carry? A few items or a full grocery run? That sets the weight.
- Will the customer keep it? A one-event giveaway and a retail bag have very different fabric needs.
- How detailed is the artwork? If it has small text or photos, avoid jute.
- Does it need to be washed? If yes, cotton or canvas.
- How will it ship? Weight and bulk affect carton count and freight, so a lighter fabric can change your landed cost even when the bag itself costs more.
If you are not sure, send us the use and the artwork. We suggest a fabric and weight, and can quote two options side by side so the comparison is on paper.
What does not change
Whatever fabric you choose, three things stay the same on a bulk order: you approve a sample before the full run, your artwork is reproduced as you supplied it, and the minimum order is set per style. Handles, size, gusset, lining, zip and labels can all be specified to your drawing.
