Muslin drawstring bags in bulk: fabric, uses and how to order

Candle and soap brands, jewellers, wedding planners and gift companies order muslin drawstring bags when the packaging should feel natural and handmade rather than glossy. The fabric is light, breathable and soft, and the pouch closes with a simple pull of the cords. This guide answers the questions buyers ask before ordering in bulk: what muslin actually is, which weight to pick, and how printing and sizing work.
What muslin is
Muslin is a plain-weave cotton fabric with a soft, slightly crinkled surface. It is much lighter than the cotton duck used for tote bags, which makes it ideal for small pouches that should feel delicate rather than structured. In lighter weights the weave is slightly open, so the fabric breathes and hints at the contents without fully showing them. Our drawstring bag range includes muslin-style pouches alongside heavier cotton options.
Common uses
The same pouch serves very different buyers. Candle and soap makers pack bars and jars in muslin because the fabric protects the surface while letting the scent through. Jewellers and crystal sellers use small pouches for rings and stones. Wedding and party planners fill them with sweets, dried petals or small favours for guests. Tea, spice and herb sellers use them as sachets because the weave holds the contents while allowing aroma out. Tell us the use in the quote form and we will suggest a fabric weight to match.
Fabric weight and finish
Muslin comes in lighter and heavier weaves. A light muslin suits favour pouches and sachets where breathability matters; a heavier weave gives more opacity and a sturdier feel for retail product packaging. Natural unbleached cream is the most popular finish for eco and handmade brands; bleached white suits clean, clinical lines. If the contents are heavy or pointed, a heavier cotton drawstring bag from the same range may serve better.
Choosing a size
Measure the product first, then add room for the gather at the top. A pouch that exactly matches the product's dimensions will not close, because the drawstring channel takes up height. As a rule, add at least 3 cm to the product's height and enough width for the bag to sit softly rather than stretched. Our drawstring bag size guide walks through measuring with examples, and the small cotton drawstring bags page shows the most popular favour sizes.
Printing and branding
Screen printing works well on muslin: simple logos and one or two colours sit cleanly on the flat weave, and the print stays soft to the touch. Very fine detail and photographic images are less suited to the open weave. For repeat orders the printed design is confirmed on a real pouch before production. See the options on our custom logo drawstring bags page, or read the guide to tote bag printing methods for how screen print compares with other methods.
How to order
Send the use, approximate size, quantity and delivery country in the quote form and we reply with the fabric weight, dimensions and print setup we recommend. Minimum order quantities apply and depend on the size and print. If you are deciding between sizes, ask for samples with your quote and we will confirm the sample plan before production.
